Questions
Short answers about what SEC Watch does and how it works.
What is SEC Watch?
A website that watches official US disclosures and sends your phone an alert when a company insider or a senior politician you follow reports a stock trade.
Where does the data come from?
Insider trades come from the SEC's EDGAR system. Politicians' trades come from the Clerk of the House of Representatives and the US Office of Government Ethics. Every alert links to the original filing.
How quickly do alerts arrive?
Insider filings usually reach your phone within about a minute of the SEC publishing them. Politicians' reports are checked through the day and alerted as soon as they appear.
Why are politicians' trades weeks old?
Officials have up to 45 days to report a trade, so these are never real time. SEC Watch shows when each trade happened and when it was disclosed. Amounts are the ranges officials are required to tick, not exact figures.
Which politicians are covered?
Members of the House of Representatives, the President, the Vice President and senior executive-branch officials. Senators aren't covered yet, because the Senate's disclosure site blocks automated access.
Do I need to install anything?
No. SEC Watch runs in your web browser. Phone alerts come through ntfy, a free app for iPhone and Android, and the Help page walks you through setting it up.
What does it cost?
Nothing during the beta. Paid plans will follow later; you'll be told well in advance, and you'll never be charged unless you choose a plan.
How do I get access?
SEC Watch is invite-only during the beta. Request an invite and you'll get an email when there's a place.
Is this financial advice?
No. SEC Watch shows what has been disclosed. Filings can be amended or contain mistakes, so check the original before relying on anything.
What do you do with my data?
Only what's needed to run your account and send your alerts. There's no advertising and no tracking, and you can download or delete your data at any time. The privacy notice has the details.
